Why I run DonationOffers.com as a free service

With the birth of my first child in November 2002 came the need to acquire a multitude of books, supplies, clothes, toys, etc. I discovered that many acquaintences - and even some strangers - offered to give us much of what we needed. Eventually I came to the realization that many people keep things that they no longer need, so that they can be given to those in need - the pleasure they get from knowing that they helped someone else far outweighed the financial benefit they could have gotten had they gone through the effort to sell the items (for example at a garage sale or on ebay).

I conceived this site as a way to extend that concept and make it easier for more people to offer their unneeded items to more people in need. My dream is that this site will grow to be a great resource, a way to:

  • help the needy with a trivial effort
  • reduce the discards filling our trash piles
  • foster a more empathetic attitude toward strangers (enhancing the overall karma of the planet and eventually leading to world peace after larger organizations and governments embrace the recognition that we're all connected)
  • Hey, why not dream big? Somebody has to. I perceive that we are entering a period of migration toward increased awareness of, and caring for, those around us (I call it the Age of Empathy). As soon as enough of us share that vision, the critical mass will be achieved that guarantees that result. I was profoundly impressed by the film and book Pay It Forward and want to contribute to the movement it created. Come along...
